We welcome Brant Walkley, who has joined the GMPG as a Ph.D. student in the area of geopolymers. Brant has his Bachelor in Chemical Engineering with Honours, and has a Bachelor in Science in biochemistry and molecular Biology as well from University of Melbourne. March 2013

We have been glad to have the Visit of Professor Holmer, Head of Department of one of the biggest programs of Engineering in University of Sao Pablo, Brazil.

We welcome Laura Jukes, who has joined the GMPG as a Research Assistant in August 2012.

We welcome David Brice, who has joined the GMPG as a Research Assistant in June 2012.

Dr John Provis, our Senior research fellow and Manager of the group left his position last June 2012, and moved for a full professorship position in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Sheffield, UK.

Dr. Susan Bernal, Research Fellow, and Rupert Myers, new Ph.D. student moved as well to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Sheffield, UK.

Dr. Dingwu Feng, Senior research fellow and Adam Kilcullen, left the world of the research to the industrial one.

We welcome Jenny Trochez, a Ph.D. student from the University de Valle, Cali-Columbia, who is visiting us for a 3-month period as a part of his Ph.D. studies. Jenny was awarded a visiting fellowship through the MERIT program.

We have been glad to host Erich Rodriguez, from Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain, for a 6-month period as a part of his Ph.D. studies.

We have been very glad to host a 3-month visit from Chris Shearer, a Ph.D. student in the Kurtis group at Georgia Tech, USA. Chris was awarded a visiting fellowship through the EAPSI program, funded by the Australian Academy of Sciences and the National Science Foundation.

We have been very glad to host 1-month visits from Dr Andrzej Cwirzen and Dr Karin Habermehl-Cwirzen, from Aalto University, Finland.

We welcome Dr Rackel San Nicolas, who has joined us as a postdoc, having completed a Ph.D. in the LMDC group, Universite de Toulouse, France, including some time spent as a visiting Ph.D. student in the GMPG in 2010.

Susan comes to us having completed a postdoc at Aarhus University, Denmark and a PhD at Universidad del Valle, Colombia, including some time spent working in the GMPG as a visiting PhD student in 2008-9.

We welcome Rackel San Nicolas from Universite Paul Sabatier, France, who is visiting the GMPG for a couple of months in March-April 2010 to work on her PhD.

The work we have carried out using the Hard X-ray Nanoprobe instrument at the APS synchrotron, Argonne National Lab, USA, in collaboration with colleagues Dr Volker Rose from ANL and Dr Susan Bernal from Universidad del Valle, Colombia, is featured as a Research Highlight on the ANL Centre for Nanoscale Materials website [link].

We welcome Sima Mohammadnejad, who has joined the GMPG as a PhD student in January 2010.

We welcome Adam Kilcullen, who has joined the GMPG as a Research Assistant in January 2010.

Congratulations to Chu Zheng Yong, who been awarded the degree of M.Eng.Sci. Chu Zheng's thesis was passed by the examiners in January 2010.

We welcome Idawati Ismail, who has joined the GMPG as a Ph.D. student, in conjunction with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (where she is also a Lecturer), in October 2009.

Dr John Provis has been shortlisted for the 2009 Young Engineer of the Year Award by the Institution of Chemical Engineers. This award is sponsored by GSK, and is awarded globally to the best chemical engineer under the age of 30. John is one of five shortlisted candidates, and the only Australian.

Professor Guy Mercier visited us on sabattical from INRS, Universite de Quebec, Quebec, Canada in 2009

The book Geopolymers: Structures, processing, properties and industrial applications, edited by J.L. Provis and J.S.J. van Deventer, has been published. This book contains 19 chapters written by international experts in the field of geopolymer technology, and covers all aspects of the chemistry and engineering properties of geopolymers. Congratulations to Susan Bernal, who visited the GMPG for 9 months as part of her Ph.D. studies at Universidad del Valle, Colombia in 2008–9. Susan’s Ph.D. degree has now been awarded, and her time in Melbourne is discussed in an article in the Universidad del Valle Faculty of Engineering newspaper.

Dr John Provis has been awarded the 2009 Brian Robinson Fellowship, administered by the Banksia Foundation. John will spend approximately 2 months in 2010 working with collaborators at the University of California, Berkeley, on a project involving synchrotron X-ray microscopy of geopolymer materials.

Congratulations to Ebrahim Najafi Kani, who visited the GMPG from Iran University of Science and Technology for approximately 6 months in 2009 to work on his Ph.D. Ebrahim has now been awarded his Ph.D. degree.

GMPG student Claire White has been awarded an internship to spend 6–9 months working at Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA in 2009

Congratulations to Dr Peter Duxson, who was awarded the INNOVIC Next Big Thing Award for 2008, for his work on geopolymers. This is a statewide competition showcasing the best inventions developed in Victoria each year, and is a very prestigious honour.

GMPG research was featured in the May–June 2008 issue of Materials Australia, in an article entitled “Going green with geopolymer concrete.”
